IELTS Test Day 2026 — What to Bring, Timing, and Results
Knowing what to expect on IELTS test day reduces test-day anxiety and prevents avoidable mistakes — the wrong ID, missing the check-in window, or being unfamiliar with the section order. This guide walks through every step from check-in to results.
What to Bring
Bring the same valid passport (or national ID accepted by your test centre) you used to register. No other ID is accepted. Bring transparent water bottle (label removed). All other items — phones, watches, bags, food, pens — go in the locker. Pens, pencils, and erasers are provided for paper-based; computer-delivered candidates use a keyboard plus scratch paper.
Check-In and Security
Arrive 30 minutes before the published start time. Late candidates are not admitted. You will be photographed, fingerprinted, and your ID verified. The photo and biometric data appear on your Test Report Form to prevent impersonation.
Section Order and Timing
Listening (30 minutes + 10-minute transfer for paper, no transfer time for computer), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) — back-to-back with no break. Speaking is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner, either later the same day or within 7 days of the written test.
Computer-Delivered vs Paper-Based on the Day
Computer-delivered: type Writing answers, click-to-highlight on Reading, headphones for Listening — results in 3–5 days. Paper-based: handwrite Writing answers, physical highlighting on Reading, communal speaker for Listening — results in 13 days.
Speaking Interview
The 11–14 minute Speaking test is recorded and assessed by a single examiner. Part 1 (4–5 min): introduction and familiar topics. Part 2 (3–4 min): 2-minute long turn from a cue card with 1 minute prep. Part 3 (4–5 min): two-way discussion on abstract themes related to Part 2.
Results and Score Reports
Computer-delivered results: 3–5 days. Paper-based: 13 days. You receive one official Test Report Form (TRF). Universities and immigration authorities verify TRFs through the IELTS verification portal — no need to send physical copies for most institutions. Scores are valid for 2 years.
