IELTS Vocabulary — Art and Culture (Band 7+)
Art and culture appears in Speaking Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Writing Task 2 — usually framed around government funding, the role of tradition, or globalisation. Twelve topic words and a few key collocations let you handle every angle.
12 Essential Words
Cultural heritage. To preserve traditions. Indigenous culture. Contemporary art. To commission a work. Patron of the arts. Thought-provoking. Aesthetic appeal. Cultural exchange. To pass down (traditions). Globalisation. To attend a performance.
Art vs The Arts
"Art" (uncountable) usually refers to visual art — painting, sculpture, drawing. "The arts" (always with "the") is the broader category including music, theatre, dance, and literature. Examiners notice when candidates use these interchangeably.
Model Task 2 Paragraph
"Public funding for the arts is often dismissed as a luxury, but it plays an essential role in preserving cultural heritage and supporting contemporary artists who might otherwise lack patrons. Without government investment, smaller venues that commission new works and protect indigenous cultures would struggle to survive."
Common Task 2 Prompts
Should governments spend money on the arts when there are other priorities such as healthcare? Is it important to preserve traditional culture in a globalised world? Do you think modern technology is a threat to traditional art forms?
