IELTS Speaking Part 1 — Family (Band 7+ Sample Answers)

Family is in the Part 1 rotation because it lets the examiner test relationship vocabulary, present perfect tense, and your ability to make a small cultural comparison — three things the band descriptors specifically reward.

What Examiners Want

Distinguish between immediate and extended family, mix present simple with present perfect ("I've lived with..."), and add one cultural comparison ("a generation ago...") to demonstrate Grammatical Range.

Sample Q&A: "Do you live with your family?"

"I do, yes — I live with my parents and my younger sister, who's still at university. We've all been under one roof since I moved back after graduating, mainly because rent in our city has become really difficult for young professionals."

Vocabulary Lifts (Band 6 to Band 7)

"I live with my family" becomes "I'm still under the same roof as my parents and younger sister". "My family is big" becomes "I come from a fairly extended family". "I am close to my mother" becomes "My mother is the one I confide in most". "Families are smaller now" becomes "Most couples I know are choosing one or two children".

Common Follow-Ups

How much time do you spend with your family? Who do you take after — your mother or your father? Has the role of the family changed in your country? Is it common for grandparents to live with their children?
