International nurses applying for UK NMC registration face one of the strictest IELTS requirements in any professional field. This guide explains the exact NMC rules, the OET alternative, and the lesser-known "two-sitting combination" route. For the test format see the complete IELTS guide; for the broader UK requirements see minimum IELTS score for the UK.
NMC IELTS requirements (2026)
IELTS Academic, with at least 7.0 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking; at least 6.5 in Writing; and an overall band of 7.0. Test must be taken within 2 years of application.
OET as an alternative
OET (Occupational English Test) at grade B in all four skills is accepted by NMC and is widely considered easier to prepare for because the content is healthcare-specific.
Combining two test sittings
NMC allows you to combine results from two IELTS sittings if both are within 6 months and you scored at least 6.5 in each skill across the two sittings — and only if you achieved the required minimum (7.0/6.5) in at least one skill in one of the sittings.

Two years from the test date.
